Green Key & Anclote Park Field Trip

Fourteen stalwart birders gathered at Green Key on our coldest morning since mid-April
to begin our coastal field trip.  Although it was brisk, the bright sun gave us beautiful images of the shore birds and we knew the heavy jackets would be coming off soon.  In all, we identified a very respectable 63 species.  Sixty-one of the birds were seen by at least two people but the clapper rail and marsh wren were ideed by sound.
The complete list:     Ducks:  Blue-winged Teal, Hooded & Red-breasted Merganser. 
                                Pied-billed Grebe.  Brown Pelican.  Double-created Cormorant.
                                Anhinga.  Herons:  Great Blue, Little Blue, Tricolored,&Green.
                                Egrets: Great,Snowy,& Reddish.   Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.
                                White Ibis.  Wood Stork.  Both Vultures.  Osprey.  Bald Eagle.
                                 American Kestrel.  Clapper Rail.  Common Moorhen &American
                                Coot.  Plovers:  Black-bellied, Semipalmated, & Killdeer.  Other 
                                shorebirds:  Yellowlegs sp., Willet.  Spotted,Least & Westtern
                                 Sandpipers.  Whimbrel.  Marbled Godwit.  Ruddy Turnstone. 
                                 Sanderling.  Dunlin.  Common Snipe.  Gulls:  Laughing & Ring-
                                 billed.  Terns:  Royal, Forster's, & Black Skimmer.  Doves:
                                 Rock Pigeon, Eurasion Collared, Mourning,& Common Ground.
                                 Monk Parakeet.  Belted Kingfisher.  Woodpeckers:  Red-
                                 bellied,& Downy.  Blue Jay.  Fish Crow.  Marsh Wren.   Blue-
                                 gray Gnatcatcher.  American Robin.  Mimics:  Gray Catbird,&
                                 Northern Mockingbird.  European Starling.  Warblers:  Palm,
                                 Prairie, Yellow-rumped,& Yellow-throated.  Northern Cardinal.
                                 Red-winged Blackbird.  Common & Boat-tailed Grackle. And
                                 finally,  House Sparrow. 
This impressive list illustrates that the more eyes we have, the more we will see.  Birders
of all skill levels are welcome on field trips and beginners are especially welcome.  Being with a group such as ours is the quickest way to learn.  Also, be sure to look at the awesome photo gallery of this trip posted by the talented Mike Kell.
